The University of Winnipeg implemented its waste minimization policy in 2007. The policy is thorough and comprised of 9 goals, including working towards zero waste emissions from the University’s use of energy and materials, accepting that the act of procuring of materials and energy implies a responsibility of stewardship for any wastes that are generated from them, and developing and implementing waste reduction policies and procedures which comply with or exceed the ISO14001-2004e standard for environmental management systems. The policy also enforces reporting procedures to internal and external stakeholders. Importantly, the policy document prescribes staff responsibility and indicates legal authority for the policy.
