National Geographic, sustainability and the Tar Sands

National Geographic magazine recently published an article on the tar sands which sparked a political storm in Canada.

"In northern Alberta the question of how to strike that balance (between economics and the environment) has been left to the free market, and its answer has been to forget about tomorrow. Tomorrow is not its job," says the article.

This publication follows profiles on the tar sands in Dominion, the Globe and Mail and the Walrus.

Is it possible to make the Tar Sands sustainable? Why or why not?
